CALCULATE THE QUANTITY NEEDED

Calculating the amount of shingles you need for your job depends on the exposure of the shingles as well as the desired design. The larger the gauge, the less shingles you will need.

Here are some examples of the areas covered by one square foot of shingles based on the most commonly used courses.

Size

4 inches(10 cm)

5 inches (12.5 cm)

6 inches (15 cm)

Quantity

1 toise

Area Covered

80 pi2 (7.3 m2)

100 pi2 (9.3 m2)

120 pi2 (11.2 m2)

The amount of loss should be considered.

ROOFS

For roofs, the steeper the slope, the more exposure to the weather and the more shingles will be required to reduce the pitch.

In addition, proper pitch provides triple the protection. Remember, a good wood shingle roof can last 25 to 30 years, and in some cases up to 50 years.

A standard package of shingles covers 25 sq. ft. (2.3 m2) with a 5" (12.5 cm) shingle nap. Shingles are measured in toises, 1 toise = 4 bundles of shingles.

In order to calculate the quantity required for a roof, you need to know the type of roof, the ratio of the length of the roof to its width, the slope of the roof, the pitch, the type of shingles used (there is more breakage when using the lower grades), the type of ridge and hip pieces (prefabricated or field fabricated) and the general area.

WALLS

For walls, calculate the total area to be covered and divide it by the area covered by one square foot of shingles. Since the walls are less exposed to the weather, a larger gauge can be used and fewer shingles will be required.

CALCULATORY

Here is a little calculator that will help you estimate how many bundles of shingles you will need to cover your surface. The greater the exposure, the fewer bundles you will need.

Exposure

* Calculate an additional 5% for cutting.

* Note that bundles are measured in toise (1 toise = 4 bundles)
